On Autism & Defiance: An Early Personal Memory

Early memory… 3 years old.
Supper. I was full. Stopped eating.
‘Rents: “Clean your plate or go to your room.”
I leave one bite. On purpose.
Command comes to put it in my mouth.
I do. But refuse to chew it or swallow.
Next morning, mother-figure takes me to bathroom sink.
“Fine. Spit it out.”
Proud of that 3 year old. Unfortunately by 4, he gave up.
By 46, he weighed 405 lbs.
Fortunately, by 58 he began to wake to his true autistic nature. Now weighs 196.
Parents are powerful. But not omnipotent.
